A Japanese civic group in Saitama Prefecture organized a public study session to present historical evidence of the atrocities committed by the Japanese Imperial Army in Nanjing in 1937. The session was held on December 13, China's National Memorial Day for Nanjing Massacre victims. The group urged the Japanese society to confront these historical facts.
The session was led by Yoichi Jomaru, a former journalist with Asahi Shimbun. He introduced a collection of wartime Japanese newspaper reports published shortly after the fall of Nanjing, including an article from December 24, 1937, in the Nara edition of Osaka Asahi Shimbun. This report documented the mass killings carried out by Japanese troops during their invasion of China.
