The death toll from a shooting incident at Sydney's Bondi Beach on Sunday has increased to 16, police said on Monday. 14 individuals were killed at the scene, with two more succumbing to their injuries in the hospital. The victims were between the ages of 10 and 87, according to New South Wales (NSW) authorities. 

NSW Police Force Commissioner Mal Lanyon told a press conference on Monday morning that the two alleged shooters were a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son. The older suspect, a licensed firearm owner with six legally held guns, was killed during the incident.

Approximately 40 people were hospitalized with injuries, five of them in critical condition.

The shooting occurred at around 6:47 p.m. local time on Sunday, when the two men opened fire on a crowd of at least 1,000 people gathered at the beach for an event marking the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon classified the attack as terrorism, with the motive still under investigation. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the violence as "pure evil" and vowed to combat antisemitism.

This is the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which led to major gun law reforms.
