Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded six contracts for 660 new electric buses, including 360 single-deck and 300 double-deck vehicles, which will be gradually deployed from late-2026 to replace diesel buses reaching the end of their statutory lifespan.

In a statement released on Monday, the LTA said the move marks its first large-scale purchase of electric double-deck buses.

The authority also issued a tender in November to install electric-vehicle charging systems to support the electrification of the country's public bus fleet.

Singapore plans to have a fully cleaner-energy public bus fleet by 2040. By 2030, electric buses are expected to account for half of the fleet, and more tenders for electric buses will be launched in the coming years, the statement said.

Singapore will also offer grants to support owners of zero-tailpipe-emission heavy vehicles and expand the charging network for electric heavy vehicles as part of its latest vehicle electrification effort to decarbonize, according to the LTA. Both programs will start on January 1, 2026, and will be available for three years.
