International oil prices climbed on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered what he called a "total and complete blockade" of all sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela. In a Truth Social post, Trump said Washington would not allow a "hostile regime" to control U.S. oil or other assets, further heightening tensions with Caracas and adding a geopolitical risk premium to the market. West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude both settled up by around 1.2-1.3 percent, after briefly gaining nearly 2 percent during intraday trading.
