Coral reef ecosystems are among the most biodiverse on Earth and are often called the "rainforests of the ocean." They play a vital role in maintaining marine biodiversity and safeguarding the ecological security of islands and reefs. However, coral reefs worldwide are in decline due to climate change, outbreaks of harmful organisms, and human activities.
As China's primary coral reef distribution area, Hainan has remained committed in recent years to the scientific protection and restoration of coral reef ecosystems, continuously enhancing the diversity, stability, and sustainability of its marine environment.
To date, the coral planting project in Sansha City has achieved phased results, with 100,000 coral seedlings planted. In addition, the largest artificial coral seedling base and planting demonstration area in the Xisha Islands has been established, where 143,000 coral larvae have been cultivated.
Coral reef restoration not only helps rebuild marine habitats and stabilize food chains but also enhances the resilience of marine ecosystems and strengthens the ecological foundation of islands and reefs.
