China's bio-manufacturing industry flourished during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), achieving breakthroughs in scale, technology and cluster development, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
During this period, China's bio-manufacturing industry steadily expanded, reaching a total scale of 1.1 trillion yuan (about $156.2 billion). The output of bio-fermentation products accounted for over 70 percent of the global total, with sub-sectors such as food and additives, and bio-pharmaceuticals achieving an annual output value of over 400 billion yuan.
So far, China makes up more than 20 percent of global patent applications in the field of bio-manufacturing. A number of national key laboratories and industrial innovation platforms were established, and domestically produced high-throughput gene sequencers, large-scale fermenters and other new instruments and equipment were put into industrial applications.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China cultivated a number of backbone enterprises in the bio-manufacturing sector with an annual operating revenue exceeding 10 billion yuan.
Dozens of enterprises leading an individual field of the manufacturing industry, and technologically advanced "little giant" enterprises also emerged during the period.
China also supported the establishment of the first batch of nearly 40 pilot-scale capacity building platforms and a number of high-quality incubators according to local conditions.
