In the heart of the megacity of Shenzhen, a mangrove forest of just around 100 hectares supports approximately 100,000 migratory birds each year, while storing carbon far more efficiently than most terrestrial forests.

With the launch of the International Mangrove Center in Shenzhen, local conservation efforts are now being linked to global cooperation, connecting urban wetlands to shared climate and biodiversity goals.

As China advances its national strategy on ecological protection and climate action, mangroves are playing an increasingly important role – both as wildlife habitats and as blue carbon ecosystems.
