The Nigerian police said on Tuesday that they have launched a search and rescue operation for at least 28 travelers kidnapped by gunmen in central Nigeria's Plateau State on Sunday night.

Alabo Alfred, police spokesperson in Plateau, said that security forces, working alongside other agencies, have begun coordinated efforts to rescue the victims of the attack, which occurred near the Zak community in Wase Local Government Area.

"We are working to bring everyone back safely. We are also searching for the kidnappers and will bring them to justice," Alfred said.

The victims, including women and children, were reportedly traveling to an Islamic event in the Sabon Layi community when their vehicle was intercepted.

Local media quoted residents as saying the whereabouts of the abducted group remain unknown, adding that two princes and a religious leader leading the delegation were among those taken.
