At a Palm Beach press conference on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States "needs" Greenland for its national security and named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to the self-governing island of Denmark. In response, the leaders of Denmark and Greenland said that the island cannot be annexed, stressing that its status and Danish sovereignty must be respected under international law.
