China releases first blue book on climate resource economy

CGTN

China's first blue book on the climate resource economy was released on Thursday by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), providing a systematic review of how climate resources are being transformed and applied across different sectors of the economy.

As global climate change intensifies, climate resources have become a core factor in promoting sustainable economic and social development, according to a CMA official.

The blue book focuses on agriculture, energy, health and low-carbon development among various sectors, offering multi-dimensional analysis of pathways and outcomes in the economic transformation of climate resources.

In agriculture, assessments of agroclimatic resources have supported food security, with findings showing that the maize cultivation belt in northeast China has expanded northward by about 61 million mu (nearly 4.1 million hectares). In the energy sector, research indicates that improved forecasting accuracy for wind and solar power can reduce the proportion of disaster-related losses and optimize power grid dispatching. In tourism, climate-related landscapes, such as seas of clouds and sunrises, have become new drivers of economic growth in some regions.

The blue book provides scientific support for improving the efficient utilization of climate resources and advancing China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals as well as ecological civilization development. It also offers scientific references for research, government decision-making, industrial innovation and climate governance.
