The Chinese mainland has condemned remarks by Taiwan region's leader Lai Ching-te, accusing him of colluding with external forces to advance so-called "Taiwan independence." During an interview, Lai called for "peace through strength" and promoted a proposed $40 billion arms purchase from the United States. In response, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang said on Thursday that the DPP authorities are the source of instability.
