New high-speed rail boosts connectivity in central China
China has officially opened a new high-speed rail link between Wuhan and Yichang (both inside the central province of Hubei), further strengthening connectivity along the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
The 314-kilometer Wuhan–Yichang section of the Shanghai–Chongqing–Chengdu high-speed railway began operations at 9:50 a.m. on December 26. Designed for speeds of up to 350 km/h, the line cuts the fastest travel time between the two cities to just 69 minutes – 34 minutes shorter than before.
As a key part of China's national high-speed rail network, the new route adds a second high-speed corridor between Wuhan and Yichang and enhances Hubei's role as a central transport hub. It is expected to boost regional mobility, economic integration and high-quality development across central China.
