The Chinese Embassy in Mexico on Saturday issued a statement, expressing strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to U.S. politician Peter Navarro's recent smearing of Chinese exports in Mexican media.
Navarro, the White House's senior counselor for trade and manufacturing, is attempting to politicize and weaponize economic and trade issues, essentially using public opinion as a cover for hegemonic practices, according to the statement.
Terming Navarro's remarks as "extremely despicable," it noted that the U.S., as the primary beneficiary of the global economic and trade system since World War II, should bear the responsibility of promoting global cooperation and safeguarding global trade.
However, today's U.S.-style hegemony has become even more extreme, attempting to reshape international trade rules through unilateralism and economic coercion, said the statement.
The statement also emphasized that openness leads to progress, while isolation results in backwardness.

China has consistently advocated for resolving economic and trade differences through equal dialogue and consultation, opposed all forms of unilateralism, protectionism, and discriminatory and exclusionary measures, and firmly rejected practices that harm China's interests, statement said.
Amid growing uncertainty in the global economy, China remains unwavering in its commitment to building an open world economy, according to the statement. It added that China welcomes all countries to share in the opportunities of China's development, benefit from its vast market and achieve mutual success and common development through deeper integration of interests.
The statement concluded by urging people like Navarro to seriously reflect on their mistakes, abandon political manipulation, stop self-deceptive performances and return to the right track as soon as possible.
