Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire agreement during the third Special General Border Committee (GBC) meeting on Saturday, with the participation of ASEAN observers.
Ceasefire talks between the two countries began at around 9:40 a.m. local time on Saturday at a border checkpoint in Thailand's Chanthaburi Province.
The two countries have seen repeated flare-ups along their shared border this year. Armed clashes broke out on July 24, with both sides accusing the other of violating international law. On August 7, Thailand and Cambodia reached consensus on ceasefire arrangements at a special border meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, agreeing to maintain existing troop deployments and refrain from reinforcing forces along the border. On October 26, the two sides further signed a joint statement on peace during the ASEAN Summit.
Tensions escalated again from December 7, when intense fighting erupted in border areas, with both sides accusing the other of firing first. The latest round of clashes has resulted in more than 100 casualties and forced hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee their homes.
From December 24 to 26, representatives from both countries held border meetings to discuss ceasefire issues and prepare for the third special GBC meeting on December 27.
