Stories in 2025: Spanish youth finds the true Beijing in hutong

Meritxell Yélamos, an international student in China from Spain, made a special choice this year – to move into a hutong in Beijing. She believed the hutong, narrow alleyways that are characteristic of the city, would offer the most authentic picture of the city. The ancient courtyard houses, interwoven lanes and daily bustle allow her to experience the unique coexistence of history and modernity every day.

Beijing's rich culture and vibrant energy have always left her in awe. She enjoys the tranquility of morning exercises at the Temple of Heaven, strolls along the old, quiet streets near the Drum Tower and appreciates the architectural blend of Han and Tibetan cultures at the Yonghe Lama Temple. Of course, there are also those unforgettable food experiences – the crispy Peking duck, the richly flavored fried sauce noodles and the crystal-clear candied tanghulu in winter. Each dish becomes a lasting memory of the city's flavors.

Meritxell believes that when visiting China, you need to slow down your pace, explore the streets, alleys and customs here, and you will discover a country rich in history yet brimming with human warmth.
