CMG reveals top 10 news on China's rural revitalization in 2025

China Media Group (CMG) on Monday unveiled its list of the top 10 news stories highlighting China's rural revitalization progress in 2025.

1.     

The Recommendations of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) for Formulating the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development, which was adopted at the fourth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, underscores that top priority must be given to issues related to agriculture, rural areas and rural residents. The document said that the country aims to accelerate agricultural and rural modernization and advance all-around rural revitalization.

The 20th anniversary of President Xi Jinping's landmark concept that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" was marked in 2025. First introduced in Yucun – a former mining village in east China's Zhejiang Province – the community has since evolved from an industrial hub into a premier model of ecological renewal and sustainable tourism. Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization offers a brand-new vision about making strides toward eco-friendly modernization, aiming to guide human society toward a clean, beautiful, and prosperous future.

President Xi Jinping extended congratulations to China Agricultural University faculty, students and alumni on the university's 120th founding anniversary, calling on it to cultivate more professionals with expertise and passion for agriculture.

China's grain production for the first time exceeded 1.4 trillion jin (700 million tonnes) in 2024 and the country continued steady grain production in 2025, with total output reaching about 1.42975 trillion jin (714.875 million tonnes), an increase of 1.2 percent.

China unveiled a plan to accelerate building up its strength in agriculture for the period from 2024 to 2035 and a plan on all-around rural revitalization for the 2024-2027 period, which set a series of clear targets. By 2027, the government aims to achieve substantial progress in the modernization of rural areas, and by 2035, decisive progress has been targeted in the all-around revitalization of rural areas, with agricultural modernization essentially realized and rural areas equipped with the basic conditions for modern living.

The "No. 1 central document" for 2025, the first policy statement released by China's central authorities this year, called for enhanced efforts in work related to agriculture, rural areas and farmers in 2025 and beyond, with a target of advancing all-around rural revitalization and further consolidating the country's agricultural foundation.

2025 marks the final year of China's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) and sees historic achievements: every county connected with gigabit networks, 5G coverage in every township and broadband access in every village. Tap water coverage in China's rural areas reached 96 percent. A total of 2,199 counties implemented tightly-knit medical consortia at the county level, and over 95 percent of village clinics were included in the medical insurance system.

The five-year transition period successfully concluded with China's poverty alleviation achievements consolidated and expanded. The baseline to prevent large-scale relapse into poverty was firmly secured, and regular assistance was incorporated into the comprehensive implementation of the rural revitalization strategy.

China's Law on Rural Collective Economic Organizations officially took effect, clarifying the special legal person status, property management and income distribution mechanisms of collective economic organizations. It marks a milestone in the legalization of the country's basic rural management system.

China's first conference on social etiquette and civility in rural areas was held. The Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the CPC and six other departments jointly issued the "Work Plan for Enriching Rural Culture Through Literature and Art" (2025–2027), which proposes promoting a flourishing rural culture, changing outdated social mores, and turning the countryside into a beautiful and harmonious place for people to live and work in.
