U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that he had a "very productive" telephone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin prior to meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida over the latest draft of a peace plan aimed at ending the Ukraine crisis.
"I just had a good and very productive telephone call with President Putin of Russia prior to my meeting, at 1:00 P.M. today, with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine," Trump said on Truth Social. "The meeting will take place in the main dining room of Mar-a-Lago. Press is invited."
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the telephone conversation between Putin and Trump on Sunday.
Trump and Zelenskyy are expected to talk about the framework of the 20-point peace plan, including a possible ceasefire timetable, a proposed demilitarized zone, the management of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, territorial control of the Donbas region, and security guarantees following the end of the crisis.
Following their meeting, Trump said he believes progress toward a peace deal has accelerated.
Trump told reporters at a joint press conference with Zelenskyy that he thinks "we're getting a lot closer, maybe very close" to a peace deal to end the Ukraine crisis. The two presidents also spoke with European leaders, including leaders of NATO and the European Union, during the course of their meeting.
Trump said that about 95 percent of the terms of the peace plan have been agreed upon by parties involved, though "one or two very thorny issues" still remain. Zelenskyy added that the United States, Europe and Ukraine have almost 100 percent agreed on security guarantees for Ukraine. "We discussed all the aspects of the peace framework," Zelenskyy said.
