Immediately after Cambodia and Thailand signed a joint statement agreeing to a ceasefire on December 27, foreign ministers and senior military officials from China, Cambodia and Thailand met at Fuxian Lake in Yuxi, China's Yunnan Province. They had helpful and constructive discussions about consolidating the ceasefire and improving bilateral relations between Cambodia and Thailand, and reached an important consensus, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Tuesday at a daily press briefing.
Lin noted that the press release of the China-Cambodia-Thailand Fuxian Meeting identifies five aspects where Cambodia and Thailand will step up communication and enhance mutual understanding, namely consolidating the ceasefire, resuming normal exchanges step by step, rebuilding political mutual trust, improving Cambodia-Thailand bilateral relations, and safeguarding regional stability.
Cambodia and Thailand expressed their gratitude to China for providing strong support for closer dialogue between the two countries and expressed appreciation for China's positive role.
China supports the peace effort of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). We will continue to play a constructive role in the Asian way in the rebuilding of mutual trust between Cambodia and Thailand, and stand ready to promote Cambodia-Thailand relations, and offer all necessary facilitation and support, including ceasefire monitoring, humanitarian assistance, and de-mining cooperation, so that Cambodia-Thailand relations will soon return to the right track, said the spokesperson.
Lin reiterated that this week's meeting and consensus once again show China's role as a benign and effective enabler and its non-disruptive, non-competitive and non-hegemonic approach to resolving conflicts, and reflect China's image as a responsible major country.
"China will continue to make due efforts in its own way to uphold regional peace and stability and advance the building of a community with a shared future with our neighbors," said Lin.
