China says it welcomes the smooth start to Myanmar's general elections, after polls closed in the first of three phases of voting on December 28.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said on Monday the first-stage vote was held as scheduled, marking the official launch of the country's electoral process. Chinese observers, along with representatives from other countries and international organizations, were on site to monitor the first phase of the general elections. Observers said the process was generally smooth and orderly.
Lin added that China expressed hope that the second and third phases of voting will also proceed smoothly, helping ease tensions and stabilize the situation in Myanmar. Lin has stated China's support for Myanmar's efforts to safeguard stability and promote reconciliation, stressing that the country's future should be decided by its people through political processes suited to national conditions.
