According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the waters near Amami-Oshima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, at around 5:12 p.m. local time on December 30. The quake had a very shallow focal depth, and no tsunami risk was observed.
