Record-breaking cargo boom: Xinjiang's international freight leads aviation expansion in China

00:34

In 2025, Xinjiang Airport Group hit a record cargo throughput of 405,000 tonnes (up 34.7 percent year on year), led by Urumqi Tianshan International Airport's 333,000 tonnes (up 41.2 percent).

International freight surged as the growth driver, with 5,915 cargo flights (up 174 percent) and full-freighter volume exceeding 120,000 tonnes (up 219.55 percent).

Urumqi's designation as a national logistics hub enabled 18 new international routes to 34 cities in 22 countries. Cross-border e-commerce exports reached 80,000 tonnes (66 percent of international volume), generating 7 billion yuan (over $1 billion) in trade, cementing Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region's role in global air cargo.
