Chinese automaker BYD dethroned Tesla as the world's biggest EV manufacturer on Friday. This marks the first time BYD has surpassed Tesla in terms of annual sales.
Tesla's delivery number for 2025 fell almost 9 percent from the previous year, the second consecutive year of its sales number decline, according to the company's fourth-quarter report released Friday. Its 1.64 million deliveries were topped by BYD's 2.26 million battery-powered vehicles sold last year.
BYD, an automaker that manufactures both electric vehicles and internal combustion engine vehicles, is primarily driven by the growth of its electric vehicle sector. Sales of battery-powered vehicles surged by nearly 28 percent in 2025, significantly contributing to the overall growth of 7.73 percent in all new car deliveries.
BYD's overseas expansion, despite the hefty U.S. tariff, has made ground in Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The company sold a record high of over 1 million vehicles outside China in 2025, marking a 150 percent growth from the previous year.
