China has decided to strengthen export control on dual-use items to Japan, taking effect on Tuesday, the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) announced.
The country prohibits the export of all dual-use items to Japanese military users, for Japan's military purposes, and for any other end-users and end-use purposes that help enhance Japan's military capabilities, the ministry said.
According to a ministry spokesperson, the decision is a direct response to recent erroneous remarks by Japanese leadership regarding China's Taiwan region.
Heightened geopolitical friction
The spokesperson told reporters that the escalation follows Japanese statements suggesting potential military intervention in the Taiwan Strait. Beijing views these comments as a severe violation of the One-China principle.
"To safeguard national security and interests and fulfill international non-proliferation obligations, China has decided to take these measures in accordance with the Export Control Law and related regulations," the spokesperson said.
