Following Washington's military action against Caracas, China sent a clear message to the U.S. at the UN Security Council meeting on January 5: "Release Maduro and his wife at once," and "stop toppling the Government of Venezuela."

Sun Lei, the charge d'affaires of China's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, gave a solid rebuke to Washington's actions and made it clear that China stands by the UN Charter and firmly opposes the use of force against Maduro's government.

China called for the immediate release of President Maduro and his wife, who were both forcefully taken by U.S. forces on January 3.
