No country is the world's police, China tells UNSC after U.S. attacks Venezuela

Updated 12:10, 06-Jan-2026

"No country can act as the world's police," said Sun Lei, the charge d'affaires of China's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after U.S. strikes on Venezuela.

Ambassador Sun Lei remarked that the results of previous U.S. actions in Iraq, Latin America and the Caribbean resulted in "persistent conflict, instability and immense suffering for the ordinary people."

The U.S. forcibly seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and transported them to New York where they are to face trial.
