Nearly 700 enthusiasts gathered for the first Liaoning Public Ice Cart Open at the Xiaoling River Ice Rink in Jinzhou, northeast China's Liaoning Province. 

Winter sport lovers competed in single- and double-blade categories on hand-made ice carts in a low-cost and fun race that harkens back to childhood games.

China's regions are successfully tapping into ice and snow resources as well as promoting grassroots sports to boost their local economy.
