On the southern edge of the Taklimakan Desert, nearly 10,000 migratory birds have gathered at Ruohai Lake in northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Ruddy shelducks and mallards cluster on patches of open water, feeding and resting through winter. Ongoing wetland restoration has boosted fish and other aquatic life, providing a safe, food-rich habitat for birds during winter.
