Chinese wildcard Shang Juncheng beat Italian No. 5 seed Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets at the ATP Hong Kong Open on Thursday, advancing to the quarterfinals.
Both players held in their first three service games but then Shang broke the opponent in the eighth to lead before holding to take the first set 6-3.
The 20-year-old Chinese continued to play better and better as he began the second set with another break. Though Sonego tried to rally as the contest went on, Shang didn't leave him too many chances before sealing the deal 6-4 with a love game in the 10th.
The victory enabled Shang to reach the last 8 at the tournament for three straight years. He will battle second-seeded Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan on Friday.
