Hot Take: Unpacking secrets of green J-35, China's latest stealth fighter

China's advanced J-35 stealth fighter has begun the year with a new test flight. An upgraded prototype, in a distinctive green primer, recently took to the skies from Shenyang, revealing more changes of the aircraft.

The green look of J-35 is the factory primer, applied before the aircraft receives its operational coating. At this stage, no final paint has been added, making testing, inspection and adjustments easier. It is a standard step in aircraft development before the application of more advanced and costly coatings.

Observers have noted more key upgrades in design, including redesigned engine nozzles that suggest a more powerful turbofan may be onboard. It perfectly meets the tough demands of carrier operations like catapult launches, ski-jump takeoffs and arrested landings.

Another notable addition is an aerial refueling port on the aircraft's spine, signaling compatibility with a flying boom system – a first for Chinese fighters. This feature allows for faster in-flight refueling, extending the jet's range and mission flexibility.

Although its green exterior may look plain for now, this test aircraft provides a clear signal of China's rapidly evolving naval aviation capabilities.
