In September 2025, China proposed the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), building on the framework established by the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative.
Aligned with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, the GGI seeks to promote closer solidarity and coordination within the international community, and enable a more robust response to the challenges of the times.
The initiative emphasizes adherence to the principle of sovereign equality, directly targeting the shortcomings of a system in which "a few countries call the shots," and affirms that the destiny of the world should be shaped collectively by all peoples. Regardless of size, strength or level of development, all countries are equal members of the international community, with the right to participate in global governance.
Speaking with CGTN, three foreign political party leaders shared their views on this initiative. Lotte Rortoft-Madsen, chairperson of the Danish Communist Party, said one of the main cornerstones of the GGI is enabling people around the world to decide their own affairs, calling it a strong defense of the UN Charter.
Gyula Thurmer, president of the Hungarian Workers' Party, emphasized that the world needs competition and dialogue rather than exploitation and war, adding that China's approach to global governance is useful.
Thulas Nxesi, deputy national chairman of the South African Communist Party, highlighted the importance of the GGI, saying global institutions should reflect the interests of the whole world, not only the West.
