China solidified their standing in Group D at the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Australia on Sunday in Riyadh. Following a goalless draw against Iraq in their opener, the Chinese team showed their mettle, capitalizing on crucial moments to edge past their opponents.

The breakthrough came in the 43rd minute when a ball into the box found Peng Xiao, who finished from the defensive position, registering a rare goal for a center half. This timely strike lifted the spirits of the Chinese side as they headed into halftime with the lead.

After the break, Australia sought to regain control, launching a series of attacks to equalize. In the 62nd minute, Ayden Hammond came close but was met by a stunning save from Li Hao. The Chinese goalkeeper showcased his reflexes once again, denying Ariath Piol mere moments later from close range.

As the match wore on, tension heightened. In stoppage time, a deflected save from Li hit Giuseppe Bovalina's hand and went in, but the goal was disallowed after VAR review, preserving China's slim advantage.

With this win, Antonio Puche's squad now sits atop Group D with four points, positioning them favorably for the knockout rounds. Australia, holding second place, will look to recover in their next match. China's upcoming challenge will be against Thailand, while Australia faces Iraq, with both fixtures set for Wednesday.
