China hopes the Iranian government and people can overcome the current difficult situation and maintain national stability, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that his administration is weighing "some very strong options," including potential military action against Iran, amid mounting reports of unrest in the country.

When asked to comment on Trump's remarks, Mao said that China has always opposed interference in other countries' internal affairs, advocated for the sovereignty and security of all nations to be fully protected under international law, and opposed the use of force or the threat of it in international relations. "We call on all parties to do more to contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East," she said.
