Li Xinpeng wins gold medal in FIS Freeski World Cup at Lake Placid

Li Xinpeng of China won the men's gold medal at the FIS Freestyle Aerials World Cup at Lake Placid in the United States on Monday. It's also the first world cup win of his career.

The final world cup event before the Winter Olympics featured four Chinese skiers, Li Xinpeng, Li Tianma, Wang Xindi and Sun Jiaxu all reaching the second round in the final.

The snow grew heavier in the second run. Sun chose a back full-double full-double full with a 5.1 degree of difficulty. Though he touched the ground with his back when he finished, he still scored 107. 10 points.

Wang competed after him and didn't have the best landing either, but still received 112.00 points, good enough for a silver medal.

Li Xinpeng was the last to take his run and he completed his tricks perfectly to get 137.19 points to top the podium. Canada's Miha Fontaine takes bronze with 107.73.

On the women's side, three Chinese skiers, Xu Mengtao, Shao Qi and Kong Fanyu made second round in the final.

Kong sufferd an injury when she finished her second run after landing poorly and needed to be assisted off the course. Veteran Laura Peel fell into the snow hard as well when she landed and the Australian finishes fourth.

Beijing Winter Olympics champion Xu Mengtao was the final one to compete and was in great form, completing her tricks with 105.17 points. She finished in second, behind a wonderful score of 105.60 from home favorite Kaila Kuhn.

Xu and Sun lifted the season's overall trophy, the crystal globe. Feng Junxi has been named Rookie of the Year and Team China became the Nations Cup Winners.
