A herd of more than 100 wild yaks, a first-class nationally protected species, has been seen foraging on the Haltent grassland in Aksay, northwest China's Gansu Province. The herd grazes amid a backdrop of snow-covered grasslands and mountains. The rare appearance of such a large herd reflects steadily improving ecosystems. In recent years, the region has strengthened ecological protection, leading to healthier habitats and a growing range of wildlife, including this iconic plateau species.
