The novel tells the story of an 11-year-old city boy, Hu Yuze, who spends his summer vacation with his father, a cadre who moves to work in the village of Yueman. The story follows Hu Yuze's transformation from feeling out of place to building friendships with the village children, including the spirited and determined A Ti, a rural girl who dares to chase her dreams. With the help of Hu Yuze and his father, A Ti achieves her aspiration of entering a girls' football school, while Hu Yuze learns the true joy of helping others realize their dreams.
Wu Qian, the editor of the book at Hebei Children's Publishing House, described the work as a heartfelt anthem to the courage and dreams that transcend urban and rural divides. Wu noted that outstanding children's literature can bridge these gaps, providing valuable lessons to readers from all walks of life. The vivid descriptions in the story, such as the "wild sea" that A Ti sails across and the beach soccer field where the children play, break down urban children's stereotyped image of the countryside as "backward and isolated." They also help rural children recognize the value of their hometown – the sea in Yueman Village is not just a place for fishing but a place that can nurture soccer dreams and attract tourists, while the sun conchs are not merely "seaside shells" but treasures that can be cultivated for aquaculture and crafted into artworks.
The story provides a unique perspective on the work of grassroots cadres (officials) dedicated to rural revitalization. Through the eyes of young boy Hu Yuze, the novel subtly reflects the efforts of village leaders as they befriend local farmers and work toward sustainable economic goals for the development of rural communities.
Sun Zhuoran, chief editor of Hebei Children's Publishing House, emphasized that "A Ti's Island" addresses the profound themes of education, growth, and the future, set against the backdrop of rural transition.
