Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on January 16 that Canada will allow up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) under a 6.1-percent most-favored-nation tariff rate, with provisions for gradual annual increases in the quota. He described this as "a landmark trade agreement to remove trade barriers and reduce tariffs."

"This is a positive step taken by the Canadian side in the right direction and also good news for Chinese electric vehicles seeking to explore the Canadian market," China's Ministry of Commerce stated in response. According to the ministry, China hopes that Canada will actively fulfill its relevant commitments and continue to work with China in the same direction, creating a fairer, more stable and non-discriminatory environment to further expand bilateral trade and investment cooperation in the electric vehicle sector.
