Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty (960-1279) dreams of a sky just after rain, when clouds part to reveal a pale, lingering blue. After waking up, he commands the kilns of the realm to reproduce that exact color in porcelain. For many craftsmen, it is an impossible commission. Yet in Ruzhou, artisans finally succeed. This is Ru ware, and few objects capture the allure of Chinese ceramics quite like this. But why is the color of a clearing sky so difficult to create? Why does such a glaze demand such exacting control? And what makes Ru ware so rare?

Find out in China Crafted, the upcoming season of CGTN Art Series. Stay tuned!
