China's courts handled around 40,000 first-instance foreign-related civil and commercial cases in 2025, a surge of nearly 50 percent from the previous year. Authorities say the increase reflects a continued commitment to equal protection for both domestic and foreign parties under the law.

Over the year, courts nationwide processed more than 20 million civil cases. Among them, intellectual property disputes rose by 5 percent, while environmental cases increased by 11 percent, pointing to a growing judicial focus on innovation-driven development and environmental protection.

In the criminal justice system, both case numbers and defendants declined, which officials describe as part of a broader shift toward a strategic shift in social governance.

Altogether, the figures suggest a legal system that is adapting to high-quality development, while working to provide a stable, predictable, and rules-based environment for business and society.
