A derailment involving two high-speed trains near the city of Cordoba, southern Spain, has resulted in at least 39 deaths, including the driver of one of the trains. Additionally, 170 people have sustained minor injuries, with 15 others in serious condition.

The accident occurred at around 7:45 p.m. on January 18 when a train carrying 317 passengers on the Malaga-Madrid route derailed for reasons still unknown near Adamuz, about 20 kilometers from Cordoba, Spanish authorities said. The derailed train struck another high-speed train traveling on an adjacent track from Madrid to Huelva, causing the latter to derail.

CGTN stringer was on-site during the rescue operations, which are being coordinated by all emergency departments involved.
