South Africa has entered a "national disaster" as heavy rains and flooding continued to batter northern parts of the country, its National Disaster Management Centre announced on January 18 local time.
Persistent rainfall since late December has triggered severe flooding in the country's northern regions, resulting in at least 37 deaths and damage to thousands of homes, according to South African media reports.
Relief efforts are still underway, with the South African National Defence Force deploying helicopters to assist in evacuating trapped individuals.
