Zigong lights up a mythic glow for the Year of the Horse

A new lantern show in Zigong, southwest China's Sichuan Province, will open on January 23, with all lantern installations now complete. The festival blends traditional lantern-making with tie-dye, paper-cutting and other intangible cultural heritage crafts, weaving them into Chinese myths, epic legends and classic historical tales. Featuring 11 large-scale sets of lanterns and over 200 medium and small displays, the event creates a fully immersive storyscape inspired by the Year of the Horse.

Highlights include a 300-meter long themed street, with costume and prop rentals for a diverse range of photo ops. Adding to the experience, 360-degree roaming performances unfold along the visitor route, with interactive storylines that turn every step into a scene – and every visitor into part of the story.
