The Chinese government consistently encourages and supports capable Chinese enterprises to invest in Europe in accordance with market principles, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday.

The remarks came during a daily press briefing in response to French President Emmanuel Macron's speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he stated that "China is welcome, and we need more direct Chinese investment in Europe." He expressed hope that Europe will create a fair, non-discriminatory, transparent and predictable market environment for Chinese companies.

Guo emphasized that the essence of China-EU economic and trade ties is complementarity and mutual benefit. The competitiveness of Chinese products, he noted, stems not from subsidies but from sustained research and development investment, market competition, and well-developed industrial chains. China has never deliberately pursued a trade surplus, and is willing to serve as both the world's factory and the world's market. Guo called on Europe to adopt a long-term and open perspective and to work with China to promote the sustained and healthy development of China-EU economic and trade relations.
