Voting for all three phases of Myanmar's multi-party democratic general election concluded on Sunday afternoon, with the final phase held in about 60 townships on the same day.

The first phase was held in 102 townships on December 28 last year, and the second phase took place in 100 townships on January 11 this year.

About 5,000 candidates from 57 political parties contested seats in the Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House), the Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House), and the Region and State Hluttaws (Region and State Parliaments), according to the Union Election Commission (UEC).

The three-phase general election covered 263 constituencies of the Pyithu Hluttaw; 73 constituencies under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system and 26 constituencies under the proportional representation (PR) system for the Amyotha Hluttaw; 255 constituencies under the FPTP system and 42 constituencies under the PR system for the Region or State Hluttaws; and 29 ethnic constituencies of the Region or State Hluttaws.

Zaw Min Tun, leader of the Information Team of Myanmar's National Defense and Security Council, said the country will convene parliament in March, and the new government will take office in April.

Myanmar's last general election was held in November 2020.
