A senior Chinese diplomat urged Japan to reflect on and correct the erroneous remarks made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding China's Taiwan during a UN event on Monday.

Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, said the victory in World War II defended the bottom line of human civilization and gave birth to the existing international legal system at the UN Security Council's open debate on International Rule of Law.

Eighty years ago, the International Military Tribunal for the Far East tried Japanese war criminals, severely punished the chief culprits whose hands were stained with the blood of people in victim countries, upheld international justice and safeguarded human dignity, and also issued a stern warning against any illegal attempts to revive militarism and pursue aggression and expansion again, Fu said.

However, Takaichi has recently moved against the tide of history by openly linking Taiwan to Japan's "survival-threatening situation," sending a wrong signal of potential military intervention in the Taiwan question and refusing to retract her erroneous remarks, the Chinese diplomat said.

Fu stated that Taiwan's return to China is an outcome of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and an important component of the post-WWII international order. This solid fact is firmly established in historical, political and legal terms, he added.

Takaichi's erroneous remarks constitute a gross interference in China's internal affairs, a betrayal of the international obligations that Japan must fulfill as a defeated country, an open challenge to the international order based on international law, and a serious violation of the basic norms of international relations rooted in the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

China urges Japan to face up to history, reflect on and correct its mistakes, and give the international community a responsible account through concrete actions, Fu said.
