Meanwhile, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Simon Stiell cautioned that the U.S. withdrawal would exacerbate its domestic climate challenges, including wildfires, floods, and extreme heat. Stiell also noted that China's climate leadership offers opportunities for positive environmental action that benefit the planet, drive economic growth, and improve public health.
