On January 28, the United Nations confirmed receipt of an official notice from the United States of its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, which took effect on January 27. Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq emphasized the importance of all nations honoring their climate commitments, urging against any retreat from these obligations. Meanwhile, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Simon Stiell cautioned that the U.S. withdrawal would exacerbate its domestic climate challenges, including wildfires, floods, and extreme heat. Stiell also noted that China's climate leadership offers opportunities for positive environmental action that benefit the planet, drive economic growth, and improve public health.
