Since opening in 2023, the Zikawei Library in Shanghai's Xujiahui District has quickly emerged as a new cultural landmark, often likened by visitors to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from British author J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels. Its dramatic central atrium, flanked by towering bookshelf-like walls, creates a space where readers can enjoy quiet study while others stop to snap photos. On weekends and holidays, crowds flock to the library, turning it into a popular must-visit destination.
Designed by British architect David Chipperfield, the library features two underground levels and three above-ground floors, integrating reading rooms with exhibition halls, lecture rooms, spaces for art appreciation and creative markets. With its refined, minimalist design, the building pays homage to Xujiahui's history and cultural heritage while expressing a distinct modern identity – standing out amid the surrounding historic streetscape.
