In a recent interview with the China Media Group, Luciano Buonfiglio, President of the Italian National Olympic Committee, shared several insights about the upcoming Milano Cortina Winter Games, while also stressing the country's historic expertise in hosting major international sporting events.
"Italy is one of the most experienced nations in this arena," Buonfiglio noted, reflecting on the country's rich Olympic history, which includes the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Games, 1960 Rome Summer Olympics, and 2006 Turin Winter Games. "In 2026, as we mark the 20th anniversary of the Turin Games, we are thrilled to host the Winter Olympics once again, introducing many groundbreaking innovations."
Buonfiglio highlighted the unique structure of the upcoming Games, which will span multiple regions while featuring both main and secondary opening ceremony venues. A particularly noteworthy aspect is the dual cauldron design, aimed at symbolizing unity across the host cities. In addition, the Italian flag will be carried into the stadium by two flagbearers, representing the diverse heritage of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
"We are immensely proud of these developments," he affirmed, adding that preparations are well underway. "The opening ceremony in Milan will proceed as scheduled, and we have completed and tested all competition venues. We are ready to welcome the world."
