At least 200 miners died after several coltan mine shafts collapsed in Rubaya, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, a spokesperson for the March 23 Movement rebel group confirmed on January 30. Most of the victims were artisanal miners, including women and children. The collapses occurred last Wednesday and Thursday at separate mines in Rubaya, an area that has been under rebel control since April 2024.
