Preliminary results released by Costa Rica's Supreme Electoral Tribunal showed that ruling party candidate Laura Fernandez of the Sovereign People Party (PPSO) secured victory in the general election with over 40 percent of the votes cast.

Born on July 4, 1986, Fernandez is a Costa Rican politician who served as the minister of national planning and economic policy from 2022 to 2025. During this election, her core agenda focused on promoting national institutional reform, eradicating corruption and advancing infrastructure construction.

It is reported that approximately 3.73 million voters were registered for this election and 20 candidates competed for the presidency.

According to Costa Rica's constitution and electoral law, a candidate can win the presidency directly by securing more than 40 percent of the votes in the first round, which is exactly what Fernandez achieved, avoiding a runoff election scheduled for April.
