China and Uruguay have agreed to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership, according to a joint statement released on Tuesday.
The joint statement noted that during Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi's state visit to China, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Orsi held productive talks on bilateral relations, China-Latin America ties, and international and regional issues of mutual concern. Both sides reaffirmed that sincere friendship and strong political mutual trust, grounded in equality and mutual benefit, form the bedrock of their relationship and guide future cooperation.
The joint statement underscored the multi-dimensional nature of China-Uruguay ties and commits both countries to expanding and deepening practical cooperation across multiple sectors. This includes advancing economic, trade, financial, agricultural, infrastructure, digital and technological collaboration, and tapping into opportunities in emerging fields such as green development, digital economy, artificial intelligence and clean energy.
Both sides pledged to strengthen people-to-people exchanges to enhance mutual understanding and to reinforce cooperation within international organizations and multilateral frameworks.
Uruguay reaffirmed its adherence to the one-China principle, recognizing the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China, opposing any form of "Taiwan independence," and acknowledging that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory
On the global stage, both countries emphasized support for a rules-based multilateral order with the United Nations at its core and the World Trade Organization as the foundation of international trade governance.
Uruguay spoke highly of President Xi's Global Development Initiative (GDI). The two sides agreed to strengthen practical cooperation under the GDI framework and to actively participate in activities of the Group of Friends of the GDI, contributing to the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Uruguay reaffirmed its appreciation for the Global Security Initiative (GSI) and the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI). Both sides expressed readiness to jointly uphold the spirit of the GSI and enhance cooperation in promoting regional and global peace and stability.
Uruguay also commended China's Global Governance Initiative (GGI), endorsing its principles of upholding sovereign equality, respecting international law, safeguarding multilateralism, putting people first, and emphasizing action-oriented cooperation.
China vowed to support Uruguay in taking over the chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China for the year 2026 and cooperate on Uruguay's agenda during its tenure, particularly on development issues and the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
According to the joint statement, the two leaders witnessed the signing of 19 cooperation agreements covering investment, trade and other fields. President Orsi also extended an invitation for President Xi to visit Uruguay at a mutually convenient time.
